Welcome

With levels of volunteering continuing to increase as individuals and communities respond to the changed economic environment, Louth Civil Defence is recruiting volunteers to join their work across the county in support of the emergency services.

Civil Defence volunteers receive training in a range of disciplines, including first aid; search and rescue; technical rescue; fire-fighting; boating techniques; radiation monitoring; radio communications and welfare provision.

Nationally, there are some 6,000 volunteers involved in Civil Defence across every county with the organisation now in its seventh decade having been established in 1950.

Encouraging adults interested in helping their community to get involved, James McConnell, Louth Civil Defence Officer, said: “Our volunteers do terrific work and find it a very positive experience to work in teams across very diverse operations. Civil Defence is perhaps most visible at times of extreme weather such as we experienced last winter but we can also be involved in a range of other activities year-round.

There has been a general increase in volunteering as people put their time to positive use and apply their skills and energies to their communities during the recession. Louth Civil Defence is currently recruiting for the training centres in Dundalk, Dunleer and our new training centres in Drogheda and Ardee.

For those aged over 16yrs in Louth who are considering volunteering, we would be pleased to hear from them about getting involved in Civil Defence. See the Contact page here. The commitment generally involves training for one evening per week on a year-round basis with additional weekend training and assisting at community events around the county.”

Louth Civil Defence, Training Weekend.

Members of Louth Civil Defence have attended a training weekend (25th - 26th February) at Ratra house in the Phoenix park. Members were trained in a variety of disciplines on the Saturday. On the following day, their skills were put to the test in a training exercise. Well done to all who took part and congratulations to the winning team. See the photos page for pictures.
